Tissue culture is a method of propagating large numbers of plants of the same genetic line for conservation and for economic exploitation. When the population of a species becomes low, such asexual production is more efficient than promoting sexual reproduction. However, each species has its own optimal culture conditions which must be determined for mass propagation to be successful. Cryopreservation of tissues is also a useful technique for saving species or clones far into the future without having to maintain active cultures.
